A salt-based softener is the thing that actually removes hardness. Size it from your grains and how much water you use, not bathroom count. It needs a drain.

The department’s water-quality information page says they use chlorine and ammonia together to form chloramines, and that Dallas water is considered moderately hard. The 2025 CCR is linked from the reports page. We are not inventing a 2025 grains number from a third-party “150 ppm” card.
