What the equipment does

Match the machine to the chemistry and the sewer rule. Then maybe shop a category.

Acid neutralizer

Increases pH by dissolving alkaline media so downstream oxidation and ion exchange can work, and so plumbing sees less aggressive water.

Activated carbon (whole-house or POU)

Adsorb (and with catalytic carbon, help decompose) disinfectant and many taste-and-odor compounds; may carry contaminant-specific 53 claims on a named model.

Air-injection iron and sulfur filter

Converts dissolved iron/manganese/H2S so a backwashing media bed can hold the solids — the well-water answer when staining or rotten-egg odor is the complaint.

Reverse osmosis (point of use)

Produces a separate drinking-water stream with reduced TDS and any contaminants named on that system’s 58 listing (fluoride, arsenic, nitrate, chromium-6, lead, PFAS — only if listed).

Salt-based water softener

Exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium or potassium, which is what NSF/ANSI 44 and EPA WaterSense mean by residential softening.

Salt-free conditioner (TAC / NAC)

Encourages calcium and magnesium to form suspended microcrystals that are less likely to plate as scale on hot surfaces, with no salt and no brine line.
