Oxidizes dissolved iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide with air (or another specified oxidizer), then filters solids on catalytic media such as Katalox Light or other specified beds.
What it actually does
Converts dissolved iron/manganese/H2S so a backwashing media bed can hold the solids — the well-water answer when staining or rotten-egg odor is the complaint.
What it does not do
Does not soften, does not replace a low-pH neutralizer, and does not create a PFAS drinking-water listing. Manufacturer ppm ratings are spec-sheet claims, not a substitute for a lab report.

Certification language
Katalox Light is described by Watch Water as NSF/ANSI 61 (materials) and NSF/ANSI 372 lead-free. That is not NSF/ANSI 53 contaminant-reduction certification. Other media have their own sheets.

Air-injection (AIO) valves draw an air pocket. The bed must backwash. If the well cannot deliver the published backwash GPM, pick another oxidizer strategy or a different bed — do not hope.
Katalox Light is named because it is what many quotes put next to a softener. It is a Watch Water MnO₂-coated zeolite. Compare the current manufacturer PDF to your lab results. Birm, greensand family, and other manganese-dioxide media are also real products with different oxidizer and pH rules.
