San Jose, California

San Jose Water’s 2025 CCR shows hardness from about 5 gpg on some surface water to 32 gpg on groundwater. Chloramine and chlorine may both be present. No SCV-style sewer ban found for the city file.

Check the sanitation district before installing. No San Jose ordinance matching the LACSD Santa Clarita Valley automatic-softener prohibition turned up for this file. Valley Water and the city sewer are not that district. Ask the agency that owns the sewer before you cut a brine drain.
Hardness (as published)
SJW 2025 CCR tables: hardness as CaCO3 from about 82–168 ppm (5–10 gpg) on some surface/purchased water to 155–545 ppm (9–32 gpg) on groundwater columns. Zone-dependent. — San Jose Water 2025 Consumer Confidence Report (main system)
Disinfectant (as published)
Chloramine and chlorine may both be present (SJW dialysis/aquarium notice). Surface water from Montevina and Valley Water already uses chloramines; some wells have been converting. — San Jose Water 2025 CCR; SJW Notification of Treatment Change (Williams Station wells)

If soap will not lather and you want a salt softener

Two tall mineral tanks and a black brine tank of a salt-based water softener, plumbed with copper pipe in a garage.
Salt-based softener: two mineral tanks and a brine tank.

Ask the agency on the sewer side of the bill before you cut a brine drain. California lets districts restrict self-regenerating units. A “banned in California” blog is not your district.

If you only want less scale and you hate salt bags

A single tall tank with no brine tank, installed in a laundry alcove next to a washing machine.
Salt-free conditioner: one tank, no salt bin.

A salt-free conditioner changes how scale sticks. It does not soften. Soap and spots stay closer to untreated. No brine line.

If the water tastes like pool-plus-ammonia

A single black whole-house carbon tank with a control head, installed in a garage and connected to copper pipe.

San Jose is a zone file. SJW’s 2025 CCR prints hardness that can look like Sacramento on one column and Phoenix on another.

What SJW publishes

Hardness as CaCO3 on the 2025 tables runs from roughly 82–168 ppm (5–10 gpg) on some surface/purchased water to 155–545 ppm (9–32 gpg) on groundwater. Iron printed ND on some sources and a range that reached 420 ppb on another — that is not a citywide iron-filter prescription.

SJW tells dialysis patients and aquarium owners that chloramine and chlorine may be present. Montevina and Valley Water surface water already use chloramines. Some well stations have been moving from free chlorine to chloramine. Read the notice for your pressure zone.
