Salt-free conditioners: scale vs soap lather vs glass spotting

Template-assisted crystallization does not remove calcium or magnesium. Your hardness test will not drop. Soap will not suddenly lather. Spots can remain. What it is not is a softener.

A salt-free conditioner is a scale-behavior device; it is not a water softener, it does not change a grains-per-gallon test, and it will not give you the slick feel or detergent performance of ion exchange.

Who this is for

Homeowners in brine-restricted districts, and anyone being shown a 'salt-free softener' as if it were the same appliance as a Fleck or Culligan resin tank.

“Salt-free water softener” is a marketing sentence. Softening, in the sense EPA WaterSense and NSF/ANSI 44 use the word, is cation exchange: calcium and magnesium ions are removed and replaced with sodium or potassium. A salt-free conditioner leaves those ions in the water and tries to change how they form scale.

If you buy one expecting slick skin, big soap suds, and spotless glass, you bought the wrong machine.

What TAC / NAC actually claims to do

Template-assisted crystallization (TAC) and nucleation-assisted crystallization (NAC) use a media surface to encourage calcium carbonate to form tiny crystals that stay suspended instead of plating onto hot pipes and heating elements. Pentair’s own salt-free training slides — Pentair also makes Fleck valves — say the media “only works on calcium and magnesium,” that mineral content is “still present but [made] non-reactive,” that the devices “do not soften water,” and that special detergents may still be needed.

USGS’s hardness page is the consumer picture of unconditioned hard water: soap scum, spots on glass, scale in water heaters. Those effects come from the minerals being present. A device that does not remove the minerals should not be expected to erase every effect.

What a well-applied TAC unit is for: less adherent scale on heaters and some plumbing, no salt bags, no brine line, which is why it shows up in districts that prohibit self-regenerating discharge.

Three outcomes people confuse

Scale on the heater element and pipe walls. This is the job TAC is sold for. Independent test protocols for scale (the German DVGW W512 method is often cited in the trade) are not NSF/ANSI 44. There is not a U.S. “softening” listing for a device that does not soften. Ask the vendor what protocol they ran and on what hardness water.

Soap lather and “slick” skin. Soap reacts with calcium. USGS describes that film. If calcium is still in the water, lather stays closer to untreated. Do not let a salesperson redefine “soft” as “our customers feel a difference.”

Glass spotting. Spots are mineral left behind when water dries. Crystals that are still there can still dry on a glass. Dishwasher performance is not a TAC promise.

A hardness test — titration or lab — should read about the same before and after a conditioner. If a dealer’s in-home kit “shows zero grains” after a salt-free pitcher demo, you are not looking at ion-exchange chemistry. You are looking at a demo.

What salt-free units are not

  • Not legal “softeners” in the NSF/ANSI 44 sense.
  • Not iron, sulfur, or tannin treatment. Pentair’s notes list iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, and dirty water as problem conditions for these beds.
  • Not a PFAS or chlorine device unless a separate listed cartridge is in the stack.
  • Not automatically the right SCV answer. Santa Clarita’s code exception is portable exchange for true softening without on-site brine. A conditioner is a different compromise. See LACSD legality.
  • Not maintenance-free forever. Media has a service life on the spec sheet. We will not invent a year count.

When a conditioner is a match

You want less scale, you cannot or will not discharge brine, you accept hard-water feel, and the water is already clean enough that the media will not foul (city water with modest iron is the usual fit; a dirty well is not). Pair it, if needed, with carbon for disinfectant and a certified drinking-water unit.

When it is not a match: you want soap performance, you have a well with iron and sulfur, or a dealer is using “salt-free” to dodge a conversation about what you will still see on the glass.

What to do next

  1. Decide which problem you are buying for — heater scale, soap lather, or spotting. Only the first is the TAC job.
  2. If you need true softening and the sewer forbids on-site brine, ask about portable-exchange tanks.
  3. Confirm hardness with a lab or titration; a conditioner will not change that number, so you need it for honesty, not for programming.
